Welcome to American Studies!
Flinders University
offers the only specialist American Studies program in South Australia and offers
a comprehensive examination of the United States -- through multiple topics
in American history, politics, economics, foreign policy, and culture -- that
equal or exceed that offered anywhere in the Asia Pacific region. Students can
complete a major or minor in American Studies through the Bachelor of International
Studies or the Bachelor of Arts.
American Studies is offered as a major sequence within a Bachelor of Arts,
Bachelor of International Studies and Bachelor of International Business.
And then there is the American Studies Library Collection - the product of
over thirty years of collection building and perhaps the most impressive reading
collection on the United States available in this country.
American Studies at Flinders offers a full range of undergraduate topics focused
on the study of the United States in addition to a complete honours year and
higher degree supervision at the MA and PhD levels.
Since 2000, the Department of American Studies has offered an Internship program
which allows selected students to spend six weeks attached to a governmental
or public policy office in Washington, D.C. The Internship is a six unit University
topic and is integrated into the American Studies offerings. The Australian
National University joined the Flinders University Washington Internship Program
in 2005.
It is also important to recognise the quality of the Flinders American Studies
teaching program. American Studies offers small classes, helpful supervision
and a set of identified skills which is exceptional.
If you want to study the United States in Australasia, Flinders American Studies
is the obvious choice.
