Prizes

From time to time, the School of Geography, Population and Environmental Management may award, or administer the award of, prizes which recognise the academic achievements of outstanding students in the school. Recipients are entitled to note their achievement in the curriculum vitae.

  • The John Lewis Silver Medal
    Available to a student, from each of the School of Geography, Population and Environmental Management at Flinders University and the Department of Geographical and Environmental Studies at Adelaide University who has made a significant theoretical or empirical contribution to geography* through the completion of a Masters degree or a PhD. Two medals (one for each Department) will be available annually provided that there are students of sufficient merit. The award of the medal(s) in any one year is subject to the approval of the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia Inc.
    *For the purposes of the Society, geography is defined as: the integrated study of the earth's landscapes, peoples, places and environments, putting the understanding of social and physical processes within the context of places and regions. It seeks to understand interaction between people and between people and the physical environments in which they live and upon which they ultimately depend.

  • The John Lewis Prizes
    Awarded to the students with the best results in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year Geography topics. These prizes are awarded annually by the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia through the Undergraduate Standing Committee of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University.
     
  • The Les Heathcote Prize for Environmental Management
    The Les Heathcote Prize is awarded each year to the student achieving the best overall Master of Environmental Management performance (including thesis and coursework). The prize was established in 2000 to honour Dr Les Heathcote, founder of the Environmental Management program, who retired in 1997 after 32 years of distinguished service to the University and to Geography in Australia and overseas.  (Note that before 2004 the award was for the best Bachelor of Environmental Management (Honours) performance).

    The inaugural prize was awarded in 2000 to Ms Samantha Muller.

  • The McCaskill Medal
    The Murray McCaskill Medal is awarded each year to the student achieving the best overall Honours performance in Geography, Environmental Studies or Environmental Management (including thesis and coursework). The medal was established in 1993 to honour the late Emeritus Professor Murray McCaskill, the Foundation Professor of Geography at Flinders University who retired in 1991 after 26 years of distinguished service to the University and to Australian Geography.

    The inaugural medal was awarded in 1993 to Ms Christina Jarvis.

  • The Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ) Award
    Awarded to the student achieving the best result in topic 'Issues in Environmental Management' (ENVS 3721).

    The inaugural prize was awarded in 2006 to Tamara Sinkinson.

    Awarded thereafter to:
    • Marissa Bertram in 2007

  • The Australian Population Association (APA) Prize AUSTPA
    Awarded to the student achieving the best overall mark and grade in 'Demography' (PPHR 2001).

    The inaugural prize was awarded in 2006 to Marissa Schaefer

    Awarded thereafter to:
    • Nicole March in 2007


  • The School of Geography, Population and Environmental Management Postgraduate Award for Teaching Excellence.
    The award (an amount of $350) normally shall be awarded each year, on the recommendation of the selection committee, to the postgraduate student who has, in the preceding year, pursued with most distinction teaching and related duties in the School. No award will be made if the selection committee determines that there is no candidate of sufficient merit. Applications must be received by 31 March.

    The inaugural award was awarded in 2006 to Noel Richards

    Awarded thereafter to:
    • Not awarded in 2007

  • The School of Geography, Population and Environmental Management Postgraduate Award for Public Research Output.
    The award (an amount of $350) normally shall be awarded each year, on the recommendation of the selection committee, to the postgraduate student in the School who has, in the preceding year, made the greatest research impact. No award will be made if the selection committee determines that there is no candidate of sufficient merit. Applications must be received by 31 March.

    The inaugural award was awarded in 2006 to Gavin Malone

    Awarded thereafter to:
    • Edoardo Rosso in 2007

  • The School of Geography, Population and Environmental Management Postgraduate Award for Service to Professional and University Communities
    The award (an amount of $350) normally shall be awarded each year, on the recommendation of the selection committee, to the postgraduate student who has, in the preceding year, pursued with the most distinction professional and university community service activities. No award will be made if the selection committee determines that there is no candidate of sufficient merit. Applications must be received by 31 March.

    The inaugural award was awarded in 2006 to Susan Lee
