Spaces of Oppression Research Network

Aims: This Research Network brings together staff, research students and Honours students with the common goal of exploring and helping to dismantle geographies of oppression. In particular, the Network gives attention to:

  1. mechanisms of exploitation, marginalisation, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence;
  2. ways in which those mechanisms are played out in and through places and across scales; and,
  3. means of overcoming them (including education and other forms of activism).

The Group will:

  • undertake individual and collaborative research;
  • apply for research funding (internal and external to the University);
  • foster co-operation and collaboration between Group members;
  • network with national and international researchers in the field;
  • facilitate the communication of research finds through teaching, conferences, seminars, publication and community service;
  • convene research meetings which consider, for example, work in progress, grant preparation, and recent research developments; and
  • mentor research students by including them in the activities of the Group;
  • build (both short and long-term) research associations/partnerships with (oppressed/marginalised) communities/groups/individuals to direct ‘action’ research and address specific needs.
