Current and Recent Scholarly Activities

Recent research has involved working with Associate Professor Andrew Beer and Associate Professor Alaric Maude to develop and administer a questionnaire regarding aspects of regional development.  The questionnaire will be sent to regional development officers in Australia, Northern Ireland, Eire, UK and the USA.  The purpose of the research is to consider the success of regional development activities and identify the links with the different methods used to fund these activities.

During 2000 and continuing in to 2001 I have been responsible for preparation of material to be published in the journal of the Regional Science Association - Regional Policy and Practice.  The journal is edited jointly by Associate Professor Maude and Associate Professor Beer.

I have continued to work on the evolution of topics to be made available through electronic media.  In particular I have worked on ENVS 1702, Environment, Economy and Culture and GEOG 2005 Asian Regional Development, to make these topics more accessible to students.  Since the University adopted WebCT as its platform for flexible delivery I have been involved in transferring these topics to the new format.  Asian Regional Development in particular now makes considerable use of this software and it is important to teach the students to develop their own skills in this area.

The links between Australia and Asia continue to be of particular interest.  In this response I am finalising a paper on "Hanoi" for publication in Melvin Ember's Encyclopedia of Urban Cultures for the Grolier Society for the Human Relations area Files, Yale University.  It is due out during 2001.
