Professor Iain Hay is a human geographer whose research and teaching expertise encompasses geographies of oppression and domination; professional networks and professional development (including research ethics and communication); and media and geography. He also has a longstanding interest in issues in geographic education and is currently developing work on geographies of the super-rich.

Professor Hay holds university degrees from three countries. He has a BSc (Hons) (1st class in Geography) from the University of Canterbury and a Master of Arts (with Distinction) from Massey University. He went on to complete a PhD at the University of Washington (Seattle) with the support of a Fulbright scholarship. He also holds a Master of Educational Management from Flinders University. Professor Hay is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Institute of Australian Geographers, the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Australian Institute of Management, the Royal Geographical Society, and the Governor’s Leadership Foundation of South Australia. He is also a Chartered Geographer and Certified Professional Manager.

Following four years in the Royal New Zealand Air Force and earlier appointments at Massey University and the University of Wollongong, Professor Hay’s academic career at Flinders University commenced as a Lecturer in 1992. Together with a wide range of research, teaching and community service activities, his university management experiences since then have included six successful years as Head of the School of Geography, Population and Environmental Management and roles on key University committees such as Academic Senate and Resources Committee.

Iain Hay is author or editor of eight books – several of which have gone to second and third editions – and over seventy-five scholarly chapters and papers in journals such as Geografiska Annaler B, Political Geography, Professional Geographer, and Progress in Human Geography. These have led to research awards and honours from organizations including the British Academy and Australian Institute of Urban Studies. Professor Hay has also held visiting appointments at the Universities of Auckland, Edinburgh, Kentucky and Manchester.

Professor Hay is on the Editorial Boards of ten journals including Applied Geography, Geographical Research and International Research in Geographical and Environmental Education. He was amongst the founding Editors of Ethics, Place and Environment and was the first Australasian Commissioning Editor for Journal of Geography in Higher Education. He has also served as Editor of South Australian Geographical Journal and is currently establishing a new journal entitled Cultural Landscapes.

Professor Hay has an extensive record of professional and community engagement. This includes terms as Chair of the Australian Academy of Science’s National Committee for Geography; Councillor and Secretary of the Institute of Australian Geographers; Councillor for the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia; and Trustee for South Australia Business Vision 2010. With British and American colleagues he also co-founded the International Network for Learning and Teaching in Geography (INLT). He is currently Vice-President (President-Elect) of the Institute of Australian Geographers.

Professor Hay is recognized as a university teacher of high standing. Since 1995, he has received three Vice Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching from Flinders University. He is recipient of a Carrick Award for Teaching Excellence (Social Sciences) and a Carrick Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Learning “For sustained scholarship and leadership dedicated to improving the quality of geography learning and teaching within Australia and internationally”. In 2006 Professor Hay received the Prime Minister’s Award for Australian University Teacher of the Year.
