Research Interests

My current research interests include the prevalence, consequences, and the psychological assessment and treatment of child and adolescent sleep disorders.

My current research projects include:

Infants
  • What is the best technique to use to treat babies' sleep?
  • Does controlled crying result in negative outcomes for babies later in life?
Children
  • Can parents sleep education be used to treat toddlers' sleep problems?
  • What is the best technique to use to treat school-aged children's sleep disorders?
  • Do anxious children report more severe sleep problems?
  • Can CBT for anxious children improve their sleep?
Adolescents
  • How prevalent are adolescent sleep problems in Australia?
  • What intelligence abilities are affected by sleep loss in adolescents?
  • What pre-sleep activities hinder (or help) adolescents' sleep?
  • What is the best technique to treat adolescent sleep disorders?
  • Can adolescent sleep problems be treated in the school setting?
  • Why do adolescents nap?
Adults
  • How do fatigue and sleepiness vary across sleep, medical, and mental disorders?

Sleep Clinic

I am the Director of the Child and Adolescent Sleep Clinic. Based at Flinders University, the clinic offers assessments and individualised treatments of child and adolescent sleep problems - particularly insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders.

Psychology Clinic

I am also the Director of the Flinders University Psychology Clinic. The Clinic provides intellectual, acievement, and emotional/behavioural assessments of school-age children, as well as treatments for anxiety and behaviour problems. Services are provided by postgraduate clinical psychology trainees (5th and 6th year of training) and supervised by our senior clinical psychologist, Susan McNichol.
