Project
Evaluating a non-pharmacological combination treatment of bright light
therapy and cognitive behaviour therapy for insomnia in older adults.
Insomnia is a significant problem in today’s busy world. For older
adults, difficulty in maintaining sleep during the night and early in
the morning considerably impacts their ability to maintain a high quality
of life, and optimal cognitive functioning. Currently, there is a broad
range of treatments for insomnia including prescribed pharmacological
treatments, and over the counter drugs or remedies. However, these treatments
may only provide temporary relief of symptoms, may amplify the condition
once treatment has ceased and in some cases provide a considerable risk
of adverse events such as falling or cognitive impairment.
This project seeks to investigate the efficacy of a non-pharmacological
treatment for insomnia in older adults. In a randomised controlled trial,
cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) will be combined with evening bright
light therapy (EBL) in a four-week therapy program in order to examine
the additive benefit that EBL will provide to CBT. It is hypothesised
that the combination therapy will provide the most successful treatment
for insomnia in the older adult population.
