Graduate Certificate Course in Loss, Grief and Trauma Counselling
The Graduate Certificate has been designed to offer social workers, clergy, nurses, teachers and counsellors an opportunity to gain skills and knowledge about helping those experiencing loss, grief and trauma. It provides an opportunity to gain a specific qualification in this area of practice.
The program consists of three topics of one semester each which may be taken part-time over two years or full-time in the first half of the year. The first of the three topics is offered as an intensive for four full days, usually in February. The second one allows students to specialise in two areas of loss, grief or tauma and the third requires a practicum experience at an agency responding to clients experiencing loss, grief or trauma. Students will assist with some aspect of the program in this agency and write a report on their involvement. There is a great deal of choice within the program and every attempt is made to match the choices to the student’s interests and learning needs.
Eligibility
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in the human or social sciences and have had experience working in the loss, grief or trauma area. A personal or telephone interview is required. The Graduate Certificate may be taken over two years or full time in the first semester of the year.
